What were the main reasons you chose SciNote?
SciNote provides a relatively easy to use interface considering the amount of functionality…as well as our security requirements. In addition, the activity feed is an easy way to keep up on what colleagues are working on and be prepared for meetings with the executive team.
Can you tell us a bit about your company’s work?
NanoTemper is a biotech company headquartered in Munich, Germany. We want to help create a world where every disease is treatable. We create biophysical tools for scientists to tackle their challenging characterizations. With a team of over 200 people based around the world, of which around 50 work in Research and Development at our base in Munich.

How did you decide to start using an electronic lab notebook?
As NanoTemper grew from start up to an established company in the biophysics instrumentation arena, we required a documentation system that provided both structure for our basic and applied experiments, but also allowed us to share the results internally. Prior to this, documentation was spread between paper lab books and a variety of different digital tools which meant it was difficult to share, find and gain insights from our data.

What was your ELN selection process? What were the main reasons you chose SciNote?
We demoed a variety of different ELN software solutions over a period of around nine months with different teams within research. As well as being ‘easy to use’, we also had requirements such as single sign on, and being compliant with EU law in relation to GDPR etc. SciNote provides a relatively easy to use interface considering the amount of functionality as well as our security requirements. What was the process of implementing SciNote in your company?
Our initial goal with SciNote was to use the ELN in the Research Department, where we undertake the basic experiments looking at either potential product viability or extending the applications or systems, we can measure in. In addition to signposting team member to the SciNote tutorials, we also discussed internally our ideas of how to report protocols and results. We didn’t want the ELN to increase friction doing research, so we have allowed groups and team members to explore their own best ways of using SciNote over the past year. Over time the team have embraced the product, and we are now about to roll out the ELN to the Development team to enable easier handover of projects from Research.

What benefits did you see after you started using SciNote?
Having a single space to record experimental protocols and results has allowed all our research members gain insight into the experiments being undertaken by our teammates. In addition, with the collaboration aspects of the product, it is easy to pick up an experiment from a colleague, and collaborate on analysis and reporting. We are starting to use the inventory, but that will take longer to fully implement as we share resources with colleagues who do not currently have access to SciNote.
