How did you decide to start using an electronic lab notebook?
We decided on an ELN to create an environment that ensured the highest degree of regulatory and laboratory compliance…Specifically, we wanted to ease the record-keeping process in preparation for application for FDA approval.
Can you tell us a bit about your work?
Key Proteo, Inc. specializes in developing proteomics-based assays using mass spectrometry, for use in newborn screening programs and other applications. I’m the company’s senior technologist, managing most lab-related activities as well as contributing to our regulatory compliance and quality management systems.
How did you decide to start using an electronic lab notebook?
We decided on an ELN software to create an environment that ensured the highest degree of regulatory and laboratory compliance, including organized experiment record-keeping; inventory record and management; and time stamps for every activity or change implemented. Specifically, we wanted to ease the record-keeping process in preparation for application for FDA approval.

What were the main reasons you chose SciNote?
We reviewed multiple ELNs to observe the spectrum of services provided. Ultimately, SciNote was selected over the other products because of a combination of its price, good experiment record organization, and inventory management features.

What was the process of implementing SciNote in your company?
We first reviewed the many different environments within SciNote, such as Inventories, Projects, and Protocols. There are some premade protocols to give an idea of how the area can be used. We then tailored those different environments to suit our needs, organizing our space in a way that was best for us. SciNote gives companies a lot of flexibility in customizing their personal space.

What benefits did you see after you started using SciNote?
In list order: keeping track of experiments (also experiments that fall under two or more categories—the tagging feature is great); all chemical and equipment inventory; and over all of that, the time stamping of everything. This includes any changes that are made at any given time, so everything is completely traceable. There is also a Protocol environment that was very helpful—a protocol can be loaded into an experiment file, so that the entire assay or process doesn’t need to be rewritten for every new experiment.
What is your experience with the SciNote team?
The SciNote team has been extremely helpful with any questions we’ve had, and if anyone is unable to help immediately, they will always connect the client with someone who can help or point to the variety of video modules that describe the different features of SciNote. We have nothing but respect for the SciNote team.
Do you have any tips for those who are considering SciNote?
Overall, it’s a good idea to take time to think about how to set up experiment records and inventory, so nothing needs to be changed or overhauled after the fact. We set things up the way we wanted from the start, and we’ve had very smooth sailing from the beginning as a result. One suggestion for ease-of-use to future subscribers: in the Inventory tab, create a blank column at the right-hand edge of the screen, to prevent an immovable tab from blocking inventory viewing in a small portion of that area.
